The Buckminster Fuller Dome at Woods Hole

In 1953, at the invitation of local architect Gunnar Peterson, Buckminster Fuller came to Woods Hole and constructed the world’s first free-standing commercial geodesic dome. The dome served as a restaurant until late 2002.

Initially criticized as being too modern for Woods Hole, the dome is now recognized as having historical and architectural significance. As a structure, the dome has always had its problems and through the years has undergone many changes — the original mylar shell, which let too much sun in and blew off in the hurricane of 1958.

Now abandoned for nearly 17 years, the structure suffers from advanced decay, mold, and water damage. In 2016, Woods Hole Partners purchased The Nautilus Inn and surrounding property including the Dome, with plans to restore the Dome structure as a public arts center as a part of a senior and affordable housing project.
